Join the Embassy as we present a spooky experience this Fright Night weekend! Masterful organist Dennis James accompanies the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on the Grande Page pipe organ.
A little about the film: In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world…a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community. The film features a dark, twisted visual style that greatly influenced the future American film noir. Critic Roger Ebert called it arguably “the first true horror film.” This authoritative edition of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a 4K restoration scanned from the (mostly) preserved camera negative at the German Federal Film Archive.
A little about Dennis James: Dennis James has over 50 years’ experience as a performing and recording musician with an international career as a historical multi-instrumentalist, concert organist and period-authentic silent film scorings preservationist as a performer, arranger, transcriber, restorer as well as an ensemble soloist with chamber, major symphonic and opera companies. Dennis specializes in presenting a diverse repertoire for niche programming, while restoring and/or replicating unusual and obsolete historical musical instruments, enabling their repertoire to be heard again. He maintains contingent interests in historical popular cultural artifact preservation and reuse, plus is continually active encouraging studies towards modern-day reuse of hitherto forgotten elements of past popular, theatrical and world-music cultures.
